Start with the Right Products

The products you use play an important role in how well you will clean your teeth. When choosing dental products, like toothbrushes, flosses, and toothpastes, choose those that are supported by the American Dental Association. Products that have the ADA seal of approval have been tested for safety and efficiency to ensure they will meet oral hygiene needs when used correctly.

Your toothbrush is probably the most important oral hygiene product you have. It does not matter if you use a manual or electric toothbrush. However, be sure to choose a soft-bristled toothbrush that is the right size for your mouth. In addition, use a fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen the enamel.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

Brushing your teeth removes plaque, tartar, and food particles that can lead to tooth decay. It is recommended that you brush your teeth after every meal, but that is not always possible. At the very least, brush your teeth twice a day. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and clean all surfaces of the teeth. Do not just clean the chewing surfaces. Clean the inner and outer surfaces of both the upper and lower teeth. Gently brush your tongue and the inside of your cheeks to remove unwanted bacteria.

Floss Daily

Flossing removes food, tartar, and plaque from areas a toothbrush cannot reach. It is vital to preventing gum disease. It does not matter if you floss before or after your brush your teeth. However, it is recommended you floss before going to bed.

Use about 18 inches of dental floss to gently clean between each tooth. Insert the floss between two teeth and form a “C” shape around a tooth. Slide the floss down to the gum line in a back and forth motion. Then, slide the floss back up to the crown of the tooth. Repeat this process for each tooth.

Maintain Dental Appointments

In addition to your home oral hygiene, you need to visit your dentist twice a year for preventive care. Regular dental cleanings and checkups help to prevent dental problems to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
